Almost exactly a year after revealing its plans to launch the Flow multiscreen product as a complement to its existing TV offer, Telecom Argentina is satisfied with its growth and will now make it available standalone on an over-the-top basis.

Speaking, as he did in June 2017, at the NextTV Latin America conference in Buenos Aires, company COO Gonzalo Hito told delegates that the company regarded the pay-TV landscape with equally as important linear and non-linear elements where the company’s offer was like that of a supermarket stocking its own branded products plus those of others on its shelves. This meant that for products like Flow, Telecom Argentina was receptive to the idea of its bouquet containing other firms’ content, and Hito revealed that among these would be Amazon Prime. Yet he said that the overall content strategy was to offer “pure, distinct content that was based on the tastes on Argentineans.”

While it had a DTH offer, the core of the company’s activities would be focussed on creating a network of the future based around fibre and mobile. Hito said that when it came to the increasingly important later platform, 60% of customers’ concerns were about delivering a compelling service and 40% price. “Things should just work,” he observed. “Nobody yet watches Flow on the bus, so we have to grow a lot in terms of mobile networks and connect with fibre networks below. OTT needs a different muscle to be successful.”

What he felt would not be successful was the concept of direct-to-consumers offerings which at present being leg by Disney and HBO. Hito said he was convinced that the DTV concept went against the grain of customers’ desires for things to be easy. “I’m not convinced that people will but 12 or 13 different platforms to get all that they want. There is still a future for the content integrator.” Anyone who thought that DTC could totally replace existing offers was being naïve, he concluded.
